이 유전자는 호중구(neutrophils)에 대한 화학주성 인자(chemotactic factor)로 작용하며 연골세포(chondrocytes)와 골아세포(osteoblasts)의 성장을 촉진하는 분비성 16 kDa 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 닭 myb-유발 골수성 1 단백질(chicken myb-induced myeloid 1 protein)의 연골조절인자 반복 영역(chondromodulin repeat regions)과 높은 서열 유사성을 보인다. 이 유전자의 다형성(polymorphism)은 류머티스 관절염(rheumatoid arthritis)과 관련될 수 있다.
