이 유전자는 젖산 탈수소효소(lactate dehydrogenase) 효소의 B 소단위를 암호화한다. 이 효소는 해당과정 후 단계에서 피루브산과 젖산의 상호 전환 및 NADH와 NAD+의 상호 전환을 촉매한다. 해당 유전자에는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 존재한다. 최근 연구에 따르면, 정지 코돈 건너뛰기(stop codon readthrough) 기전을 통해 대체 프레임 내 번역 종결 코돈이 사용되어 C-말단이 확장된 이소형이 생성되며, 이 이소형은 퍼록시좀에 국소화된다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 젖산 탈수소효소 B 결핍과 관련이 있다.
