LCK 유전자는 Src 계열 단백질 티로신 키나아제(protein tyrosine kinases, PTKs)에 속한다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 T세포 발달 과정에서 선택 및 성숙에 중요한 신호 전달 분자이다. 이 단백질은 미리스토일화(myristylation)와 팔미토일화(palmitylation)를 위한 N-말단 부위, PTK 도메인, 그리고 각각 인산화 티로신 함유 모티프 및 프롤린이 풍부한 모티프와 단백질-단백질 상호작용을 매개하는 데 관여하는 SH2 및 SH3 도메인을 포함한다. 이 단백질은 세포막(plasma membrane)과 세포중심체 주변 소포에 위치하며, CD4 및 CD8을 포함한 세포 표면 수용체 및 다른 신호 전달 분자와 결합한다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 대체 스플라이싱 변이체들이 기술되었다.
