이 유전자는 라미닌 감마 2(laminin gamma 2) 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화합니다. 라미닌은 세포 부착, 분화, 이동, 신호 전달, 신경돌기 성장 및 전이(metastasis)를 포함한 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여하는 세포외 기질 당단백질(extracellular matrix glycoproteins) 제품군입니다. 감마 2 사슬은 이전에는 베타 사슬의 절단된 버전으로 여겨졌으나, 감마 1 사슬과 높은 상동성을 보입니다. 이 유전자는 피부, 폐, 신장의 상피 세포(epithelial cells)에 특이적으로 국소화되어 있으며, 알파 3 및 베타 3 사슬과 함께 라미닌 5를 구성하는데, 이는 상피 조직(epithelium)을 기저막(basement membrane)에 연결하는 부착 필라멘트의 필수 부분입니다.
