LAMA5 유전자는 척추동물의 라미닌 알파 사슬 중 하나를 암호화한다. 세포외 기질 당단백질(extracellular matrix glycoproteins) 계열인 라미닌은 기저막(basement membrane)의 주요 비콜라겐 성분이다. 이 단백질은 세포 부착, 분화, 이동, 신호 전달, 신경돌기 성장 및 전이(metastasis)를 포함한 광범위한 생물학적 과정에 관여한다. LAMA5 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 라미닌-10, 라미닌-11 및 라미닌-15의 알파-5 소단위체이다.
