L1CAM이 암호화하는 단백질은 면역글로불린(immunoglobulin) 슈퍼유전자군에 속하는 축삭 당단백질(glycoprotein)로, 여러 면역글로불린 유사 도메인과 제3형 피브로넥틴(fibronectin) 유사 반복으로 이루어진 세포외도메인이 단일 막관통 서열을 통해 보존된 세포질 도메인과 연결된다. 이 세포접착분자는 신경세포 이동과 분화를 비롯한 신경계 발달에 중요한 역할을 하며, 유전자 변이는 CRASH로 알려진 X-연관 신경계 증후군을 일으킨다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 생성되는데, 그중 일부는 신경세포 특이적인 것으로 여겨지는 대체 엑손(exon)을 포함한다.
