이 유전자는 세린 단백질분해효소(serine protease)의 펩티다제 S1 패밀리 내 칼리크레인(kallikrein) 서브패밀리(subfamily) 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 단백질 분해 효소는 아밀로이드 전구체 단백질(amyloid precursor protein)과 알파-시누클레인(alpha-synuclein)의 절단에 관여할 수 있으며, 이는 각각 알츠하이머병과 파킨슨병에서의 이 단백질 분해 효소의 역할을 시사한다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)은 여러 전사체 변이체를 생성하며, 이 중 최소 하나는 단백질 분해적으로 처리되는 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화한다.
