이 유전자는 베타-글루코시다제(beta-glucosidase)와 관련된 제1형 막 단백질(type-I membrane protein)을 암호화한다. 만성 신부전(chronic renal failure, CRF) 환자에서 이 단백질의 생산 감소가 관찰되었으며, 이는 CRF에서 나타나는 동맥경화증(arteriosclerosis), 골다공증(osteoporosis), 피부 위축(skin atrophy) 등의 퇴행성 과정의 기저 요인 중 하나로 여겨진다. 또한 이 단백질의 돌연변이는 노화(ageing) 및 골 소실(bone loss)과 연관되어 있다.
