이 유전자는 인터-알파-트립신 억제인자(inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor) 단백질 패밀리의 구성원을 암호화한다. 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)에 의해 다수의 전사체 변이체가 생성되며, 그 중 적어도 하나는 전전구단백질(preproprotein)을 암호화하고, 이는 단백질 가수분해적 처리를 거쳐 인터-알파-트립신 억제인자 복합체의 무거운 사슬(heavy chain)을 생성한 후 간세포(hepatocyte)에서 혈액으로 분비된다. 이 무거운 사슬은 히알루로난(hyaluronan)과도 상호작용하며, 이 상호작용은 배란 및 수정에 역할을 할 수 있고, 또한 여러 염증성 질환(inflammatory disease)과도 관련이 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이 유전자는 3번 염색체의 유전자 클러스터(gene cluster) 내에 위치한다.
