ITGB7은 인테그린 슈퍼패밀리(integrin superfamily)에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 이 계열은 세포외 기질(extracellular matrix)에서 세포로 신호를 전달하는 접착 수용체(adhesion receptor)이다. 인테그린은 알파 사슬과 베타 사슬로 이루어진 이종이량체(heterodimer) 막 내재성 단백질로, 암호화된 단백질은 alpha4 또는 alphaE 사슬과 이량체를 형성해 백혈구(leukocyte) 접착에 관여한다. alpha4와의 이량체화는 림프구가 장 점막과 파이어판(Peyer’s patch)으로 이동하도록 하는 귀소 수용체(homing receptor)를 이루고, alphaE와의 이량체화는 칼슘 의존성 접착분자인 상피 카드헤린(epithelial cadherin)과의 결합을 가능하게 한다.
