ITGB6는 인테그린 슈퍼패밀리(integrin superfamily)에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 이 가족의 구성원은 세포외기질(extracellular matrix)에서 세포로 전달되는 신호전달에 관여하는 부착 수용체(adhesion receptor)다. 인테그린은 알파 사슬과 베타 사슬로 이루어진 이종이량체(heterodimer) 내재성 막단백질로, ITGB6가 암호화하는 단백질은 알파 v 사슬과 이합체를 형성하여 피브로넥틴(fibronectin) 및 형질전환성장인자 베타1(transforming growth factor beta 1)과 같은 리간드에 결합한다. 선택적 스플라이싱(alternate splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 생성된다.
