이 유전자는 인테그린 알파 사슬 단백질 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 인테그린(integrin)은 세포 표면 부착 및 신호 전달 기능을 하는 알파 사슬과 베타 사슬로 구성된 이량체(heterodimeric) 막 단백질이다. 암호화된 전구 프로단백질(preproprotein)은 절단되어 알파 4 소단위체(subunit)를 구성하는 경쇄(light chain)와 중쇄(heavy chain)를 생성한다. 이 소단위체는 베타 1 또는 베타 7 소단위체와 결합하여 세포 이동 및 이주에 관여할 수 있는 인테그린을 형성한다. 이 인테그린은 다발성 경화증, 크론병, 염증성 장 질환 치료의 치료 표적이다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 생성된다.
