이 유전자는 콜라겐 및 관련 단백질에 대한 막 통과 수용체(transmembrane receptor)의 알파 소단위를 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 베타 소단위와 이종이량체(heterodimer)를 형성하며, 혈소판(platelet) 및 다른 세포 유형의 세포외 기질(extracellular matrix) 부착을 매개한다. 이 단백질의 손실은 출혈 장애인 혈소판형 9번(platelet-type 9)과 관련이 있다. 이 단백질에 대한 항체는 신생아 동종면역 혈소판 감소증(neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia)을 포함한 여러 면역 장애에서 발견된다.
