이 유전자는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 단백질 계열의 구성원을 암호화합니다. 암호화된 전구단백질은 이분해되어 이합체 활성인(activin) 및 저해인(inhibin) 단백질 복합체의 소단위를 생성합니다. 이 복합체들은 뇌하수체에서 분비되는 난포자극호르몬(follicle stimulating hormone)의 분비를 각각 활성화하고 저해합니다. 이 유전자 근처의 다형성은 여성 환자의 자간전증과 관련이 있습니다.
