INHBA는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 단백질 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질분해 과정을 거쳐 이량체 액티빈(activin) 및 인히빈(inhibin) 복합체의 소단위로 가공되며, 두 복합체는 각각 뇌하수체의 난포자극호르몬(follicle stimulating hormone) 분비를 촉진하거나 억제한다. 또한 눈, 치아, 고환의 발달에 관여하며, 발현 증가는 인간 환자의 암 악액질(cancer cachexia)과 연관될 수 있다.
