IL4R은 인터루킨-4 수용체(interleukin-4 receptor)의 알파 사슬을 암호화하며, 이 제I형 막관통(transmembrane) 단백질은 인터루킨 4와 13에 결합해 IgE 생산을 조절하고 인터루킨 4에 결합해 Th2 세포 분화를 촉진한다. 막 결합 단백질의 단백질분해(proteolysis)로 생성되는 가용형(soluble form)은 T 세포의 IL4 매개 세포 증식과 IL5 상향조절을 억제할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 대립유전자 변이(allelic variation)는 알레르기 비염, 부비동염, 천식, 습진으로 나타날 수 있는 아토피(atopy)와 연관되고, 다형성(polymorphism)은 HIV-1 감염 저항성과 관련되며, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternate splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
