이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 인터루킨 1 사이토카인 (cytokine) 계열의 구성원입니다. 이 사이토카인의 활성은 인터루킨 1 수용체 유사 2 (interleukin 1 receptor-like 2, IL1RL2/IL1R-rp2)를 통해 매개되며, 인터루킨 1 계열 5 (interleukin 1 family, member 5, IL1F5/IL-1 delta)에 의해 특이적으로 억제됩니다. 인터페론-감마 (Interferon-gamma), 종양 괴사 인자-알파 (tumor necrosis factor-alpha), 인터루킨 1 베타 (interleukin 1, beta, IL1B)는 각질형성세포 (keratinocytes)에서 이 사이토카인의 발현을 촉진하는 것으로 보고되었습니다. 또한, 접촉 과민 반응 (contact hypersensitivity reaction) 또는 단순포진 바이러스 (herpes simplex virus) 감염에 의해서도 이 사이토카인의 발현이 유도될 수 있습니다. 이 유전자와 다른 8개의 인터루킨 1 계열 유전자는 염색체 2에 사이토카인 유전자 집단을 형성합니다.
