IL36A가 암호화하는 단백질은 NF-κB 및 MAPK 신호전달 경로를 활성화하여 염증 반응을 유도할 수 있는 사이토카인(cytokine)이다. 주로 피부에서 기능하며 건선(psoriasis)에서 발현이 증가하고, 발현 감소는 간세포암(hepatocellular carcinoma)과 대장암(colorectal cancer) 환자 모두에서 불량한 예후와 연관된다.
