IL31은 주로 활성화된 제2형 보조 T 세포(Th2-type T cells)에서 생성되며, 상피세포(epithelial cells)와 각질형성세포(keratinocytes)에 상시 발현되는 IL31RA와 OSMR로 이루어진 이종이량체 수용체(heterodimeric receptor)와 상호작용한다. 이 사이토카인은 알레르기성 피부 질환을 촉진하고 천식(asthma)과 같은 다른 알레르기 질환을 조절하는 데 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다.
