IL2RB는 T 세포(T cell) 매개 면역반응에 관여하는 인터루킨 2 수용체(interleukin 2 receptor)의 베타 소단위를 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 I형 막 단백질이다. 이 수용체는 인터루킨 2 결합 능력에 따라 세 형태로 존재하는데, 저친화도 형태는 알파 소단위 단위체(monomer)로 신호전달에 관여하지 않으며, 중간친화도 형태는 알파/베타 이종이량체(heterodimer), 고친화도 형태는 알파/베타/감마 이형삼량체(heterotrimer)로서 중간 및 고친화도 형태가 수용체 매개 세포내이입(endocytosis)과 인터루킨 2의 유사분열 촉진 신호 전달을 담당한다. 대체 프로모터(promoter) 사용으로 동일 단백질을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 생성되고, 단백질은 주로 조혈계에서 발현되며 일부 변이는 상류 long terminal repeat(LTR)의 대체 프로모터 사용을 통해 태반 특이적 발현을 보인다.
