IL25가 암호화하는 단백질은 인터루킨(interleukin) 17과 서열 유사성을 갖는 사이토카인(cytokine)으로, NF-kappaB 활성화를 유도하고 인터루킨 8 생성을 자극한다. IL17B와 더불어 사이토카인 수용체(receptor) IL17BR의 리간드로 작용하며, 생쥐의 유사 유전자 연구는 이 사이토카인이 Th2형 면역반응을 촉진하는 전염증성(pro-inflammatory) 사이토카인일 가능성을 시사한다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
