이 유전자는 인터루킨 1 사이토카인 계열 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 인터루킨 1 알파(IL1A)와 인터루킨 1 베타(IL1B)의 활성을 억제하며, 특히 감염 및 염증의 급성기에 인터루킨 1 관련 면역 및 염증 반응을 조절한다. 해당 유전자는 주변의 다른 5개 사이토카인 유전자와 함께 2번 염색체에 약 400 kb에 걸쳐 유전자 클러스터를 형성한다. 이 유전자의 다형성은 골다공증성 골절 및 위암 위험 증가와 관련이 있는 것으로 보고되었다. 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 여러 대체 전사체 변이체들이 보고된 바 있다.
