IL1R2 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 인터루킨 1 수용체(interleukin 1 receptor) 계열에 속하는 사이토카인 수용체(cytokine receptor)로, IL1A·IL1B 및 IL1R1/IL1RA에 결합하여 리간드의 활성을 억제하는 미끼 수용체(decoy receptor)로 기능한다. 인터루킨 4(interleukin 4, IL4)는 이 사이토카인의 발현과 방출을 유도해 인터루킨 1의 활성을 길항하는 것으로 보고되었으며, 해당 유전자는 다른 세 유전자와 함께 염색체 2q12에 사이토카인 수용체 유전자 클러스터를 형성한다. 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체와 단백질 아이소폼이 생성되어 막 결합형과 가용성 단백질이 모두 만들어지며, 가용성 단백질은 단백질분해 절단으로도 생성된다.
