이 유전자는 RED 반복 서열, 즉 반복되는 아르기닌, 글루탐산, 아스파르트산 잔기를 포함하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 세포핵 내 특정 점들에 국소화되며 핵소체는 제외됩니다. 해당 단백질의 기능은 아직 알려지지 않았습니다. 이 유전자는 5번 염색체에 위치하지만, 2번 염색체에 유사 위유전자(pseudogene)가 존재할 가능성이 있습니다.
