이 단백질은 헬릭스-루프-헬릭스(helix-loop-helix) 도메인은 가지지만 기본 도메인은 없는 전사 조절 인자들을 포함하는 DNA 결합 저해제(inhibitor of DNA binding) 계열에 속한다. DNA 결합 저해제 계열 구성원은 헬릭스-루프-헬릭스 도메인을 통해 이합체화 파트너의 기능을 억제함으로써, 우성 음성(dominant-negative) 방식으로 기본 헬릭스-루프-헬릭스 전사 인자들의 기능을 저해한다. 이 단백질은 세포 분화를 음성적으로 조절하는 데 역할을 할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 유사 위유전자(pseudogene)는 3번 염색체에 위치한다.
