이 유전자로 지정되는 단백질은 헬릭스-루프-헬릭스(helix-loop-helix, HLH) 단백질로, 전사(transcription) 인자들의 기본 HLH 계열 구성원들과 이종이량체(heterodimers)를 형성할 수 있습니다. 이 단백질은 DNA 결합 활성이 없으므로, 상호작용하는 기본 HLH 단백질의 DNA 결합 및 전사 활성화 능력을 억제할 수 있습니다. 세포 성장, 노화 및 분화에 관여할 수 있으며, 두 개의 전사 변이체(transcript variants)가 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoforms)을 지정합니다.
