HSPB1은 소형 열충격 단백질(small heat shock protein, HSP20) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 환경 스트레스에 반응하여 세포질(cytoplasm)에서 핵(nucleus)으로 이동해 다른 단백질의 올바른 접힘을 돕는 분자 샤페론(molecular chaperone)으로 기능한다. 다양한 세포 유형의 분화에 중요한 역할을 하고, 여러 인간 암에서 불량한 임상 예후와 연관되어 암세포의 증식과 전이(metastasis)를 촉진하는 한편 세포자멸사(apoptosis)로부터 암세포를 보호할 수 있다. 또한 이 단백질을 코딩하는 유전자의 돌연변이는 샤르코-마리-투스병(Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease)과 원위 유전성 운동신경병증(distal hereditary motor neuropathy) 환자에서 확인되었다.
