HSPA8은 열 유도성 구성원과 항시 발현되는 구성원을 모두 포함하는 열충격 단백질 70 계열(heat shock protein 70 family)의 일원을 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 후자에 속해 열충격 동족 단백질(heat-shock cognate proteins)로도 불린다. 샤페론(chaperone)으로서 신생 폴리펩타이드(nascent polypeptide)에 결합해 올바른 접힘을 돕고, 세포 내 막 구성 성분 수송 과정에서 클라트린 피복 소포(clathrin-coated vesicle)의 해체에 관여하는 ATP가수분해효소(ATPase)로도 기능한다. 선택적 스플라이싱을 통해 서로 다른 동형 단백질(isoform)을 암호화하는 전사 변이체들이 확인되었다.
