이 유전자는 70kDa 열충격 단백질(heat shock protein)을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 열충격 단백질 70 계열의 구성원으로, 다른 열충격 단백질과 함께 기존 단백질의 응집을 막고 세포질 및 소기관 내 새로 번역된 단백질의 접힘을 매개합니다. 또한 AU-rich element RNA-binding protein 1과의 상호작용을 통해 유비퀴틴(ubiquitin)-단백질분해경로(proteasome pathway)에 관여합니다. 본 유전자는 두 개의 매우 유사한 단백질을 암호화하는 유전자들과 함께 주요 조직적합성복합체 III (major histocompatibility complex class III) 영역에 위치합니다.
