HSL(LIPE)이 암호화하는 단백질은 대체 번역 개시 코돈(alternative translational start codons)을 이용해 만들어지는 긴 형태와 짧은 형태로 존재한다. 긴 형태는 고환(testis)과 같은 스테로이드 생성 조직(steroidogenic tissues)에서 발현되어 스테로이드 호르몬 생산을 위해 콜레스테릴 에스터(cholesteryl esters)를 유리 콜레스테롤(free cholesterol)로 전환한다. 짧은 형태는 지방 조직(adipose tissue) 등에서 발현되어 저장된 트리글리세리드(triglycerides)를 유리 지방산(free fatty acids)으로 가수분해한다.
