이 유전자는 단쇄 탈수소화효소/환원효소 슈퍼패밀리(short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase superfamily)의 일원인 3-하이드록시실-CoA 탈수소화효소 제2형(3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase type II)을 암호화합니다. 이 유전자의 산물은 다양한 지방산과 스테로이드의 산화를 촉매하는 미토콘드리아 단백질이며, tRNA 성숙에 관여하는 미토콘드리아 리보뉴클레아제 P(mitochondrial ribonuclease P)의 소단위입니다. 이 단백질은 알츠하이머병(Alzheimer disease) 발병과 관련이 있으며, 유전자의 돌연변이는 17베타-하이드록시스테로이드 탈수소화효소 제10형(17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 10, HSD10) 결핍의 원인이 됩니다. 몇몇 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체들이 확인되었으나, 오직 두 개의 전사체 변이체만이 전체 길이가 결정되었습니다.
