이 유전자는 하프토글로빈과 동등한 효율로 헤모글로빈에 결합하는 하프토글로빈 관련 단백질(haptoglobin-related protein)을 암호화한다. 하프토글로빈과 달리, 이 단백질의 혈장 농도는 겸상 적혈구 빈혈(sickle cell anemia) 환자 및 광범위한 혈관 내 용혈(intravascular hemolysis) 환자에서 변하지 않는데, 이는 하프토글로빈-헤모글로빈 복합체와 하프토글로빈 관련 단백질-헤모글로빈 복합체가 헤모글로빈 제거 수용체(hemoglobin scavenger receptor)인 CD163에 결합하는 방식의 차이를 시사한다. 이 단백질은 유방암(breast cancer) 재발의 임상적으로 중요한 예측 인자가 될 수도 있다.
