유전자 개요
이 유전자는 헴(heme) 분해 과정에 필수적인 효소인 헴 옥시게나제(heme oxygenase)를 암호화한다. 헴 옥시게나제는 헴을 빌리베르딘(biliverdin), 신경전달물질로 추정되는 일산화탄소(carbon monoxide)로 분해한다. 빌리베르딘 환원효소(biliverdin reductase)는 빌리베르딘을 빌리루빈(bilirubin)으로 전환시킨다. 헴 옥시게나제 활성은 기질(substrate)인 헴과 다양한 비헴(nonheme) 물질에 의해 유도된다. 헴 옥시게나제는 유도성 헴 옥시게나제-1과 구성성 헴 옥시게나제-2의 두 가지 동종효소(isozyme) 형태로 존재하며, HMOX1 유전자는 헴 옥시게나제과(heme oxygenase family)에 속한다.
