유전자 개요
이 유전자는 헤지호그 단백질(hedgehog protein, HH)과 상호작용하는 단백질(HHIP) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 헤지호그(HH) 단백질은 진화적으로 보존된 단백질로, 배아 발달 과정에서 사지의 앞뒤 패턴 형성 및 좌우 비대칭 조절을 포함한 광범위한 발달 과정에서 중요한 형태형성인자(morphogen)이다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 HHIP는 HH 신호 전달에 대한 매우 보존된 척추동물 특이적 저해제(inhibitor)이다. HHIP는 SHH, IHH, DHH의 세 가지 HH 계열 구성원 모두와 상호작용한다.
