이 유전자는 peptidase S1 단백질 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 비활성 단일 사슬 전구체로 먼저 합성된 후, 종말단백질분해효소(endoproteolytic processing)에 의해 활성형인 이량체 형태로 전환된다. 이 단백질은 간세포 성장인자(hepatocyte growth factor)를 활성형으로 전환하는 세린 단백질분해효소(serine protease)로 작용한다. 대체 스플라이싱(Alternative splicing)으로 인해 여러 전사체 변이형이 존재한다.
