HEPC (HAMP) 유전자는 철 항상성 유지에 관여하며, 대식세포에서의 철 저장 조절과 장내 철 흡수에 필수적이다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 전구단백질은 성숙 펩타이드로 절단되며, 이 활성 펩타이드들은 시스테인(cysteine)이 풍부하여 분자 내 결합을 형성하고 베타-시트(beta-sheet) 구조를 안정화한다. 이 펩타이드들은 박테리아와 진균에 대한 항균 활성을 나타낸다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 심근병증, 간경변(cirrhosis), 내분비계 기능 부전을 초래하는 심각한 철 과부하 질환인 혈색소증 제2B형(hemochromatosis type 2B), 즉 소아 혈색소증을 유발한다.
