HBEGF는 성장 인자(growth factor) 활성, 헤파린(heparin) 결합 활성, 막관통 수용체(transmembrane receptor) 단백질 티로신 키나아제(tyrosine kinase) 활성화 활성을 가진다. 표피 성장 인자 수용체(EGFR) 신호전달 경로를 비롯해 포스파티딜이노시톨 3-키나아제/단백질 키나아제 B(PI3K/PKB) 신호전달의 양성 조절, 상처 치유의 양성 조절 등 여러 과정에 관여한다. 세포 표면에 위치하고 세포외 공간에서 활성을 나타내며, 사구체경화증(glomerulosclerosis) 및 주산기 괴사성 장염(perinatal necrotizing enterocolitis)과 연관된 것으로 보고된다.
