HAVCR2가 암호화하는 단백질은 면역글로불린(immunoglobulin) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)와 TIM 단백질 패밀리에 속하는 Th1 특이적 세포표면 단백질이다. CD4 양성 T 보조 림프구는 사이토카인(cytokine) 분비 양상에 따라 1형(Th1)과 2형(Th2)으로 나뉘는데, Th1은 세포내 병원체에 대한 세포매개 면역과 지연형 과민반응에, Th2는 세포외 연충 감염 조절 및 아토피·알레르기 질환 촉진에 관여한다. 이 단백질은 대식세포(macrophage) 활성화를 조절하고 Th1 매개 자가·동종 면역반응을 억제하며 면역학적 관용을 촉진한다.
