이 유전자 산물은 세포독성 림프구(cytotoxic lymphocytes)의 세포질 과립에 있는 관련 세린 단백질분해효소(serine proteases) 그룹의 구성원입니다. 세포독성 T 림프구(cytolytic T lymphocytes, CTL)와 자연살해세포(natural killer cells, NK cell)는 특정 표적 세포를 인식하고 결합하며 용해하는 놀라운 능력을 공유합니다. 이들은 보통 세포 내 병원체 감염으로 생성된 펩타이드나 단백질인 ‘비자가(nonself)’ 항원을 표면에 지닌 세포를 용해하여 숙주를 보호하는 것으로 생각됩니다. 이 단백질은 다른 그랜자임(granzyme)에서 발견되는 N-당화(N-glycosylation)에 대한 합의 서열이 부족합니다.
