GYPA는 글리코포린 A(glycophorin A)로, 글리코포린 B(GYPB)와 함께 인간 적혈구(erythrocyte) 막의 주요 시알로당단백질(sialoglycoprotein)이며 MN 및 Ss 혈액형의 항원 결정기를 지닌다. 모든 집단에 흔히 나타나는 M/N 및 S/s 항원 외에도 약 40종의 관련 변이 표현형이 확인되었는데, 여기에는 Miltenberger 복합체의 변이들과 Sta의 여러 동형, Dantu, Sat, He, Mg, 그리고 Ena·S-s-U-·Mk 같은 결실(deletion) 변이가 포함된다. 이들 변이의 대부분은 GYPA와 GYPB 사이의 유전자 재조합(gene recombination)에서 비롯된다.
