GSTT1은 글루타티온 S-전이효소(glutathione S-transferase, GST) 세타 1 단백질을 암호화하며, 환원형 글루타티온을 다양한 친전자성·소수성 화합물에 접합시키는 반응을 촉매하는 단백질 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속한다. 인간 GST는 알파, 뮤, 파이, 세타, 제타의 다섯 주요 부류로 나뉘고 세타 부류에는 GSTT1, GSTT2, GSTT2B가 포함되며, GSTT1과 GSTT2/GSTT2B는 아미노산 서열 동일성이 55%로 인간 발암 과정에 관여할 가능성이 있다. GSTT1 유전자는 일배체형 특이적이어서 인구의 38%에서 결실되어 있으며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
