이 유전자는 세포를 활성산소로부터 보호하고, 외인성 물질 해독, 그리고 막(membrane) 수송을 포함한 다양한 생물학적 기능에 필수적인 글루타치온(glutathione)에 관여한다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 동종이량체(homodimer)로 작용하여, 글루타치온 생합성의 두 번째 단계인 감마-L-글루타밀-L-시스테인(gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine)의 ATP(ATP) 의존적 글루타치온 전환을 촉매한다. 이 유전자의 결함은 글루타치온 합성 효소(glutathione synthetase) 결핍의 원인이 된다.
