GRIA1은 포유류 뇌의 주된 흥분성 신경전달물질 수용체인 글루탐산 수용체(glutamate receptor) 계열에 속하며, 특히 AMPA 수용체(α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate receptor) 군에 분류된다. 이 수용체는 막관통 영역을 갖는 여러 소단위체가 모여 형성되는 이종다량체(heteromeric) 단백질 복합체로, 리간드 개폐성 이온 통로(ligand-gated ion channel)를 구성하여 다양한 정상 신경생리 과정에서 활성화된다. GRIA1에서는 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 대안 스플라이싱(alternative splicing) 전사 변이체들이 확인되었다.
