이 유전자는 BMP(골 형성 단백질) 길항제(antagonist) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. BMP와 마찬가지로 BMP 길항제는 시스타인 매듭(cystine knot)을 포함하며, 일반적으로 호모이량체 및 이종이량체를 형성한다. 이 유전자가 속한 CAN(cerberus and dan) 서브패밀리(subfamily)는 여덟 원 고리를 가진 C-말단 시스타인 매듭을 특징으로 한다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 분비된 당화 단백질의 길항 작용은 BMP 단백질에 직접 결합하기 때문일 가능성이 높다. BMP의 길항제로서 이 유전자는 기관 발생, 신체 패턴 형성, 조직 분화 조절에 역할을 할 수 있다. 마우스에서 이 단백질은 사지 싹이 자라는 동안 분극 부위에서 정점 외배엽 능선으로 sonic hedgehog(SHH) 신호를 전달하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 발견되었다.
