이 단백질은 신경계에서 가장 흔한 흥분성 신경전달물질 수용체 중 하나를 암호화한다. 이 수용체는 여러 소단위체로 구성된 이종단백질 복합체이며, 리간드-개폐 이온 채널을 형성한다. 이 유전자는 알파-아미노-3-하이드록시-5-메틸-4-이속사졸 프로피온산(AMPA) 수용체 계열에 속한다. 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 대안적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 이 유전자에서 발견되었다.
