GKN2가 암호화하는 분비 단백질(secretory protein)은 위 표면 점액세포(gastric surface mucous cells)에서 생성되며, 트레포일 인자 계열 펩타이드 1(trefoil factor family peptide 1) 또는 가스트로카인-1(gastrokine-1)에 결합할 수 있다. 위암(gastric cancer) 조직에서 발현이 현저히 감소한다는 점에서 종양 억제 유전자(tumor suppressor gene)로 작용할 가능성이 있다. 암호화된 단백질은 가스트로카인-1과 상호작용하여 위 점막(gastric mucosa)의 항상성(homeostasis)을 조절한다.
