GGT1 유전자가 지정하는 효소는 제1형 감마-글루타밀전이효소(gamma-glutamyltransferase)로, 글루타치온의 감마-글루타밀 잔기를 다양한 아미노산 및 이펩티드 수용체로 전달하는 반응을 촉매한다. 이 효소는 단일 전구 단백질로부터 유래하는 무거운 사슬(heavy chain)과 가벼운 사슬(light chain)로 구성된다. 흡수 및 분비에 관여하는 조직에서 발현되며, 당뇨병 및 기타 대사 장애의 병인에 기여할 수 있다. 여러 대체 스플라이싱 변이체(alternatively spliced variants)가 확인되었다.
