이 유전자는 프레닐 전이효소 (prenyltransferase) 계열의 구성원이다. 이 유전자는 제란일제란일 이인산 (geranylgeranyl diphosphate, GGPP) 합성 효소 활성을 가진 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 효소는 파르네실 이인산 (farnesyl diphosphate)과 이소펜테닐 이인산 (isopentenyl diphosphate)으로부터 GGPP 합성을 촉매한다. GGPP는 단백질의 C20-프레닐화 (prenylation)와 핵 호르몬 수용체 (nuclear hormone receptor) 조절을 담당하는 중요한 분자이다. 이 유전자에 대해 단백질 코딩 및 비코딩 모두를 포함하는 다양한 전사 스플라이스 변이체 (transcriptional splice variants)가 발견되었다.
