이 유전자는 감마-글루타밀 다이펩타이드(gamma-glutamyl dipeptides)로부터 5-옥소프롤린(5-oxoproline) 형성을 촉매하며, 이는 글루타치온(glutathione) 분해의 바로 이전 단계이다. 이 단백질은 글루타치온 항상성에서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있으며, 세포 증식에도 관여할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 발현은 암(cancer)의 잠재적 지표이다. 이 유전자의 위유전자(pseudogenes)는 염색체 5의 장완(long arm)과 염색체 2 및 20의 단완(short arm)에 위치한다. 이 유전자에 대해 여러 아이소폼(isoforms)을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체(alternatively spliced transcript variants)가 관찰되었다.
