GFRA1 유전자는 신경 세포 생존 및 분화 조절에 중요한 역할을 하는 두 가지 관련 신경영양인자인 glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)와 neurturin (NTN)의 표면 수용체(receptor)를 지정합니다. 이 수용체는 GDNF와 NTN 모두에 대한 glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked 세포 표면 수용체이며, RET 타이로신 키나아제(tyrosine kinase) 수용체 활성화를 매개합니다. 이 유전자는 Hirschsprung 질환의 후보 유전자이며, 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이형이 생성됩니다.
